A Doordarshan compilation of performances from some of the most celebrated contemporary artistes of the genre like the Padmabhushans: Kalanidhi Narayana, Dr. Yamini Krishnamurthy, Alarmel Valli and Padma Shris: Leela Samson and Malavika Sarukkai.
The recitals offer views into nearly all aspects of Bharatanatyam dance and end with two excerpts from larger choreographed traditional dance-dramas.
The film will be accompanied by explanations preceding each piece by classical exponent Ms. Sheema Kermani. (Film running time: 65 mins)
- Sheema Kermani learning classical dance from Mr. Ghanshyam in Karachi. After completing her course she became a teacher at his institute. Later she went on an Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship to New Delhi for further training where she studied under able tutoring of Leela Samson (Bharatanatyam) and Guru Mayadhar Raut & Aloka Pannikar (Odissi). She also learnt Kathak from Ram Mohan.
Sheema has been teaching dance in Karachi since 1980. She has produced a number of very committed students who are now part of her troupe and perform with her all over the world.
Besides her teaching programmes at her own studio as well as SZABIST, NCA, and IVSAA, Sheema worked as choreographer and artistic director of the Pakistan National Performing Arts Group, Karachi. She researched and choreographed many traditional, folk and classical dances that have been performed all over the world by this troupe.
